An Indian peacekeeper who lost his life while serving under the UN flag was among more than 60 military, police and civilian peacekeepers who were posthumously honored with the prestigious Indian National Medal of Honor on Thursday for their service as a supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Naik Dhananjay Kumar Singh, who served with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), was posthumously awarded the Hammarskjöld Medal during a ceremony when the United Nations celebrated the 10th International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, received the medal from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

India is the second largest contributor of uniformed personnel to peacekeeping.

It currently deploys more than 6,000 military and police personnel for U operations in Abyei, Central African Republic, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, the Middle East, Somalia, South Sudan, Western Sahara.Nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, the highest number from any troop contributing country.

During formal ceremonies at UN Headquarters on 30 May, Secretary-General Guterres laid a wreath at the Peacekeepers Memorial Site on the North Lawn in honor of all UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives since 1948.

He presided over a ceremony during which Dag Hammarskjöld Medals were posthumously awarded to 64 military, police and civilian peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the UN flag, including 61 who died last year.

In his message to mark Peacekeepers Day, Guterres said the world organization pays tribute to the more than 76,000 UN peacekeepers who epitomize humanity's highest ideal: peace.

He said, "At great personal risk, these women and men bravely work day after day in some of the most dangerous and unstable places on Earth to protect civilians, uphold human rights, support elections, and strengthen institutions." In 1948, the historic decision was taken by the United Nations Armistice Observation Organization to deploy military observers to the Middle East to monitor the implementation of the Israel-Arab Armistice Agreement.
