Srinivas R Kulkarni, an Indian-origin professor of astronomy in Hong Kong, US, will be awarded the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy for his groundbreaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray burst supernovae and other variable or transient celestial bodies.

Apart from Kulkarni, who is the George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences, Department of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, the other Shaw Prize laureates are Swee La Thein and Stuart Orkin, both from the US, Joe received the Shaw Prize in Life Sciences and Medicine in equal shares, and Peter Sarnak, another U scientist, received the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences.
