London: A 25-year-old Indian man has been sentenced to one year imprisonment by a court here for attempting to murder an Indian student in East London two years ago.

Sriram Ambarla, arrested for stabbing a woman inside a Hyderabadi restaurant in east London, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey Court on Thursday.

According to a court report by 'MyLondon', they both came to study at the University of East London in 2022, where Ambarla stalked her and resorted to physical threats before the attack in March that year.

The unnamed victim, a 20-year-old student from Kerala, who was working part-time as a waitress in an east London restaurant, has completed her master's course.

Judge Philip Katz described Ambarla as "jealous, possessive and determined" after he attacked his ex-girlfriend, whom he met in Hyderabad and separated from in 2019.“No thanks to you for not dying. She narrowly escaped dying publicly and horrifically at your hands,” Judge Katz told him as he handed down the sentence, which will run concurrently with a 12-month sentence for possessing a knife.

Ambarla is also banned from ever having contact with her victim again through an indefinite restraining order.

The court heard how immediately after the stabbing Ambarla contacted police officers and told them he had stabbed his "girlfriend" and later said he wanted to be sent back to India to face the death penalty Could.

Horrific footage of the attack and medical evidence of nine knife wounds on the victim formed part of the evidence at the trial, according to 'MyLondon' court report. The victim was left in critical care for almost a month after six surgeries.

Two forensic psychologists who evaluated Ambarla concluded that he was a dangerous criminal and ruled out that "borderline personality disorder" could have significantly impaired his judgment during the attack.
