India's Ambassador to Male, Maldives Munu Mahavar joined President Mohammed Muizzu's ambitious '5 million tree planting programme' on World Environment Day on Wednesday.

President Muizzu inaugurated the '5 Million Tree Planting Programme' during his five-year tenure to create a greener environment for the Maldives and increase vigilance against the threats posed by climate change, a statement from his office said. It is envisaged to plant five million trees. ,

The initiative was announced by President Muizzu at the COP28 conference last year.

“The trees planted today are varieties that are seen in the Maldivian environment, but are at risk of extinction.A collection of 22 types of trees, including fruit trees, shade trees, flowering trees and trees used in traditional Dhivehi medicine, were planted today, news portal Edition.mv said.

The tree plantation program took place a day after President Muizzu congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his election victory. Muizzu, whose statements and actions have hit bilateral ties since the pro-China leader assumed power in November last year, was one of the first leaders from the neighborhood to congratulate Prime Minister Modi.

Highlighting BJP's victory for the third consecutive time, Muizzu expressed optimism about the two countries working together to enhance the shared objectives in the pursuit of development and stability.

In response, Prime Minister Modi described Maldives as a valuable partner and neighbor in the Indian Ocean region.They also expressed keenness for closer cooperation to further strengthen bilateral relations.
