New Delhi, India will ensure sufficient charging infrastructure to support mass adoption of electric vehicles (EV) across the country, Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Wednesday.

The minister said the Ministry of Heavy Industries will soon introduce e-vouchers for electric vehicle (EV) buyers to avail incentives under the recently approved PM E-DRIVE (PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement) scheme.

"We are rapidly improving the (EV) charging infrastructure," he said, while speaking at the Ficci and Ministry of Heavy Industries seminar on 'FAME's success in transforming the electric vehicle landscape in India'.

The government plans to set up 10,763 public charging stations across the country under the FAME-II scheme, he said.

The introduction of e-vouchers represents a significant development in the government's approach to promoting electric vehicle adoption.

"This is a unique new feature of this new plan," Kumaraswamy said, adding, "The modalities of this are at an advanced stage and will be shared with you soon."

The PM E-DRIVE scheme, unveiled by the Union Cabinet last week, aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles through significant upfront incentives and development of crucial charging infrastructure.

"Our goal is to reduce our environmental footprint, improve air quality and build a competitive and resilient electric vehicle manufacturing industry," Kumaraswamy said.

The new PM E-DRIVE scheme introduces several novel elements, including a dedicated fund of Rs 500 million to deploy electric ambulances, an allocation of Rs 500 million to incentivize adoption of electric trucks and Rs 2,000 million to install 22,000 fast chargers for four-wheeled electric vehicles, 1,800 for electric buses and 48,400 for two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles.

On the success of FAME II, Kumaraswamy said that around 92 per cent of the Rs 11,500 crore allocated to the scheme has been utilised. The plan has also made significant progress in public transport, with 4,853 electric buses supplied out of the 6,862 authorized for intra-city operations as of July 31, 2024.

Kamran Rizvi, Secretary, Union Ministry of Heavy Industries, said, "With the advent of PM E-DRIVE, Phased Manufacturing Programme, the national value addition targets will be adjusted and modified to take advantage of our increased capacity and to We have become a true global leader in electric mobility technology.”

Hanif Qureshi, additional secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, said more than 92 per cent of the target of the FAME II scheme has already been achieved.

Ficci Chairman, CEO and Group CEO of Mahindra Group Dr. Anish Shah highlighted FAME II as one of the most transformative policies in India.

"Now, the industry has gone from zero (three years ago) to 20 percent, and we expect it to reach 100 percent in the next five years," he added.
