New Delhi: India will become a pioneer in offshore mining as many countries have not done much in this area, a government official said on Tuesday.

Offshore mining is the process of obtaining mineral deposits from the deep seabed at depths of more than 200 metres.

Speaking at the Critical Minerals Summit here, Veena Kumari D, joint secretary in the mines ministry, said the government has amended the Offshore Mines Act.

“We have amended the Act for offshore mining and we are working on the rules for that and India will be the leader in offshore mining because human countries have not done much offshore mining and we were working on it from August 2023 " He added.

Mines Secretary VL Kantha Rao, in his address on Monday, had said that the auction of offshore mines would start in three months.

The Offshore Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 2002 has been amended to provide an auction route for granting production leases for offshore minerals.

"Currently, we are making rules. We are making seven types of rules under the Act to ensure that we can auction offshore mineral blocks. We discovered 15 blocks by GSI (Geological Survey of India) “We have to do inter-ministerial consultation,” the government had said earlier.
