Chennai, June () India registered the highest team score in women's Test cricket by declaring the innings at 603 runs for six wickets on the second day of the one-off match against South Africa here on Saturday.

The previous record for the highest score was Australia's - 575 for nine - against South Africa in Perth this February.

India crossed that figure when Richa Ghosh hit a four off the first ball of the 109th over bowled by Annery Derksen.

Ultimately, after Ghosh was out for 86 runs, India declared the innings at 603 runs for six wickets in 115.1 overs.

Much of the credit for the feat goes to Indian openers Shafali Verma (205) and Smriti Mandhana (149), who made a 292-run partnership – the highest opening partnership in women's cricket.

Jemimah Rodrigues (55) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (69) also gave good services to India.

On the first day, India scored 525 runs for four wickets, the highest score ever in a day in a Test match. They broke the Sri Lankan men's team's previous record of 509 runs for nine wickets against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2002.
