New Delhi, India and Qatar have agreed to expeditiously address all looming bilateral trade issues and have identified several areas of focus to enhance both bilateral trade and mutually beneficial sectors of cooperation.

Representatives from both nations reviewed recent developments at a Joint Working Group meeting in Doha this week, the Trade Ministry said on Friday.

Both sides carried out a detailed review of recent developments in bilateral trade and economic cooperation and noted that the relationship has huge potential to expand further, the Commerce Ministry said.

Both sides identified several focus areas to enhance both bilateral trade and mutually beneficial cooperation sectors.

These include gems and jewelry, cooperation between customs authorities, trade in local currency, pharmaceuticals, food processing and food safety, cooperation in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), etc.

An Indian delegation of officials from the Department of Commerce and other ministries and organizations held a Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting with the Qatari side in Doha on July 10.

The representatives of the two nations also discussed the possible mechanism to activate the Joint Business Council to carry out its assigned role in monitoring and implementing private sector visions and proposals for trade and investment cooperation.

"Both sides also reviewed the progress of ongoing discussions for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on food security and cooperation in exchanging pre-arrival information to facilitate trade and customs control of goods and agreed to conclude them expeditiously.

"Both sides agreed to promptly address all issues impeding bilateral trade and facilitate trade promotion between the two countries," the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said.

The JWG meeting was co-chaired by the Economic Advisor of the Department of Commerce of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Priya P Nair, and the Director of International Cooperation and Trade Agreements of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Government of the State of Qatar, Saleh Al. -Manna.

Bilateral trade between India and Qatar stood at $14.08 billion in 2023-24. India is Qatar's second largest trading partner.

"Both sides agreed to hold the next meeting of the JWG in 2025, in New Delhi. The deliberations of the first session of the India-Qatar JWG were cordial and forward-looking, reflecting the friendly and special relations between the two countries," he claimed. said the official statement.
