New Delhi, Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, has said that India is on a mission to become the world's leading and most sustainable producer of critical minerals.

Critical minerals such as cobalt, copper, lithium, nickel and rare earths play a vital role in the production of clean energy technologies, from wind turbines to electric cars.

Critical minerals are particularly in demand for the production of batteries for electric cars.

Speaking recently at the Bank of America Securities Global Metals, Mining and Steel Conference 2024 in Miami, Hebbar said the mining and metals sector will play a key role in helping the world meet net-zero targets.

Hebbar, who is also a director of Vedanta, said in a statement on Saturday, "We take our role as a champion of India's natural resources very seriously and we are well positioned to take advantage of this economic growth "

The mining and metals sector holds the key to unlocking the future. The transition to net-zero targets globally will be mineral intensive and meeting this demand will not be easy, he said.

Hindustan Zinc had earlier announced its plans to enter strategic mineral exploration with the formation of subsidiary Hindmetal Exploratory Services Pvt Ltd.
