Shillong (Meghalaya) [India], India and Bangladesh held the 7th meeting of Joint Customs Group at Commissioner level in Shillong on 27-28 June.

The meeting was held to foster cooperation, improve efficiency and promote shared objectives in customs administration in order to strengthen collective efforts in customs enforcement, trade facilitation and border security, the Ministry of Finance in a press release.

For the meeting, the four-member delegation from Bangladesh was led by Md Kamruzzaman, Commissioner of Customs, Excise and VAT, Jashore. Commissioner of Customs Preventive Commissionerate, NER, Shillong, led the 10-member Indian delegation at the meeting.

In a press release, the Ministry of Finance said: "Following the meeting, many outstanding issues at the local level were resolved and many other issues were highlighted to be escalated to appropriate higher level forums, leading to the resolution of many customs and trade-related matters."

The head of the Bangladesh delegation expressed gratitude to the Indian Customs for organizing the meeting and guiding the deliberations towards results. In a press release, MEA said, "The approved minutes were signed after both sides reached consensus on several key issues related to bilateral trade and customs procedures."

Highlighting the importance of this meeting, the Finance Ministry said, "This meeting therefore marks an important milestone in bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh, emphasizing our shared commitment to enhance trade facilitation and cooperation between both nations." .

"This constructive dialogue and partnership is essential to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of cross-border trade, promote economic growth and prosperity," he added.

On June 22, the Indian Defense Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, Tamil Nadu and the Defense Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in military education in the field of Strategic and Operational Studies.

The MoU was signed during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's state visit to India on June 22. Both universities provide training to officers from all three services, preparing them for command and senior staff responsibilities.

Furthermore, they share a common ethos, curriculum and training methodology and face similar challenges. Accordingly, they decided to collaborate and signed the MoU to further enhance bilateral engagements.

This MoU will help enhance professional acumen, provide deep insight into strategic issues, help share best practices and knowledge, as well as enhance academic capabilities of student officers and faculty members. It will also facilitate the delivery of training packages, joint seminars, teacher exchanges and reciprocal visits of instructors, to name a few.
