New Delhi, India on Tuesday announced immediate financial assistance of US $ 1 million to provide relief and assistance to people affected by massive landslides in Papua New Guinea.

On May 24, a massive landslide struck the island nation's Enga province, burying hundreds of people and causing major destruction.

According to media reports from that country, more than 2,000 people died in the landslide.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences and conveyed India's readiness to extend all possible support and assistance to the Pacific island nation in its time of difficulty.

“As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and as a gesture of solidarity with the friendly people of Papua New Guinea, the Government of India is committing USD 1 million to support the relief. Provides immediate relief assistance, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, it said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said India stands in solidarity with the people of Papua New Guinea in this difficult time.

Jaishankar said on 'X', "Deeply saddened by the loss of life and property in Papua New Guinea following the recent landslides."

"Our thoughts are with the government and the people. India stands in solidarity with our friends in these difficult times," he said.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India has stood firmly with Papua New Guinea during the hardship and devastation caused by natural disasters, such as the earthquake in 2018 and the volcanic eruptions in 2019 and 2023.

"Disaster risk reduction and management is a key pillar of India's Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019," it said in a statement.

It said India remains committed to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and remains a responsible and determined responder.
