Srinagar: In view of the rising water level in rivers and drains due to incessant rains in the last three days, authorities in Kashmir have announced the closure of all schools in the valley on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.

Kashmir University has also postponed all the examinations scheduled for Tuesday.

According to officials, the water level in water bodies across Kashmir is rising due to incessant rains.

While a danger alert has been issued for the Pohru drain in Kupwara district, the water level in other water bodies in the valley, including the Jhelum river, is still below the warning mark. The Meteorological Department has predicted bad weather till Tuesday evening.

The Directorate of School Education, Kashmir on Tuesday issued orders to suspend classes in all schools up to the higher secondary level.

According to the order, this step has been taken as a precaution in view of the continuous rain.

The weather department said, "The weather will improve from tomorrow. From May 1 to May 5, the weather will be generally dry and there will be no major activity."

Earlier in the day, authorities had to suspend classes in schools due to heavy rain in Kupwara district.

"In view of the inclement weather and avalanche warning issued by JKDMA, class work has been suspended in all schools across the district on April 29 as a precautionary measure for the safety of students," an official said.

He had said that however, teaching and non-teaching staff will remain present on their duty to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the property of their respective institutions.

Some areas in Handwara and Kupwara towns were flooded, forcing authorities to launch evacuation operations for affected residents.
