Lucknow: The BJP-led NDA suffered a setback in Uttar Pradesh, where it won only 36 seats, while the India Bloc got 43 seats - a significant contribution to the opposition alliance's total.

In the 2019 general elections, the ruling BJP won 62 out of 80 seats in the country's most populous state – with ally Apna Dal (S) getting two seats.

Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party, which leads the India Bloc in UP, got 37 seats alone this time, becoming the largest party in the politically important state. BJP managed to win only 33 seats.

In the elections, SP's ally Congress won six seats including Amethi and Rae Bareli. In the NDA, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) won two seats, while Anupriya Patel-led Apna Dal (S) got one seat.The BJP suffered a loss despite a vigorous campaign in the state led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who won from his Varanasi constituency by a margin of over 1,52,000 votes.

SP chief Yadav said in a post on X that UP has once again shown a new path to the country. He said this is a victory to save the Constitution and democracy and ensure social justice.

The former chief minister, who won from the Kannauj seat, also said it was a victory against "divisive" politics. He said that this is the victory of India alliance and PDA (backward, Dalit and minority) unity.

While Chandrashekhar Azad-led Azad Samaj Party won one seat, Mayawati's BSP did not get any seats in the election.SBSP led by Om Prakash Rajbhar and Sanjay Nishad could not do much for BJP and both the organizations, contesting from one seat each, lost the elections.

Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav won from Mainpuri.

Gaining strength in partnership with SP, Congress defeated Union Minister Smriti Irani in Amethi, while Rahul Gandhi won in Rae Bareli. Both the seats are considered strongholds of Congress.

In January this year, the BJP lost in Ayodhya despite the construction of a grand temple at the religious site.

BJP had launched a scathing attack on SP and Congress for rejecting the invitation for construction of Ram temple.Apart from PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had spent a lot of time addressing election meetings in UP.

The BJP also lost the Sultanpur seat, represented by Maneka Gandhi, and the Lakhimpur Kheri seat, from where Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni was in the fray.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh won from the Lucknow seat, which he has been representing since 2014.

BJP's Ravi Kishan won the Gorakhpur seat, which is the 'karmabhoomi' of Adityanath, who had represented it five times in the past.

Actors Hema Malini and Arun Govil, who played Lord Ram in the "Ramayana" TV serial, emerged victorious in Mathura and Meerut respectively.
