Agartala, Congress on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Tripura Governor Indrasen Reddy Nallu, accusing Tribal Welfare Minister Vikas Debbarma of being involved in corruption and demanding a probe against him.

A five-member delegation of State Congress met the Governor under the leadership of President Ashish Kumar Saha.

"We sought the governor's intervention on this sensitive issue," Saha told reporters.

He alleged that Debbarma was involved in corruption in a Rs 14,000 crore socio-economic development project for tribals funded by the World Bank.

He said Debbarma had declared himself a social worker in his election affidavit and said he had assets worth only Rs 56 lakh, besides declaring his wife as a housewife.

"Now, within a year and five months of becoming minister, his wealth has increased manifold. He also claims that he has a flat in Delhi, and under-construction houses in Lambucherra, Nandannagar and Teliamura. The assets have not been disclosed in the affidavit,” he alleged.

Saha claimed that Debbarma lied to the Election Commission by filing a "false affidavit".

"Therefore, the state Congress is demanding not only his dismissal but also his dismissal as an assembly member," he said.

BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said that the allegations leveled against Debbarma are not true.

"The allegations made against the minister are not true and we strongly deny them. We stand with him. The opposition is trying to divert people's attention by making baseless allegations," he said.
