New Delhi: Every single day counts in matters related to civil liberties, the Supreme Court said on Friday, while asking the Delhi High Court to take a stand in a corruption case related to the now defunct Delhi Excise Policy. Do not decide on the routine bail plea of ​​the businessman.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall, told the bench of Justices R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta that the High Court has heard the petitioner's regular bail plea on four occasions and now the matter has been adjourned till July 8. Has been done.

He said, "It cannot be that after 40 hearings you do not decide on regular bail."

The bench said it was informed that his regular bail plea was filed in July last year.

The bench said, “In matters relating to civil liberties, every single day counts.Keeping the regular bail case pending after almost 11 months deprives the petitioner of his liberty."

“We request the High Court to decide on the bail application before the end of summer vacations,” it said.

Summer vacations in the High Court are starting from June 3. 31st May will be our working day.

Dhall is an accused in separate cases related to excise policy, which are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).ED's money laundering case stems from a CBI FIR.

A lower court had earlier rejected his regular bail plea in a corruption case registered by the CBI.

According to the investigating agencies, Dhall allegedly conspired with other accused and was "actively" involved in the formulation of the liquor policy, thereby giving bribes to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and to the "South Group" through various means. Helped to compensate.

According to CBI and ED, irregularities were committed while amending the excise policy and undue benefits were extended to license holders.

The Delhi government implemented the policy on November 17, 2021, and scrapped it at the end of September 2022 amid corruption allegations.
