Lakhimpur Kheri (UP), two men were forced to carry their dead sister on their shoulders through flooded fields here as they could not find any vehicle to transport the 17-year-old's body to their village.

A video clip that appeared on social media showed the brothers, one of them carrying the body, walking along train tracks on high ground with floodwaters on either side.

They were apparently heading to Kaanp village in the Kishanpur shrine area near Bhira.

As his brother walked along the tracks carrying Shivani's body, Manoj told some reporters that they were able to get a horse-drawn cart to the Atariya railway crossing, where they crossed the flooded road and embarked on the last leg of their journey on foot. . .

He said they could not provide better medical treatment to his sick sister nor could they get any vehicle to transport the body to their village due to suspension of road traffic towards Palia due to flooding of Sharda river.

Shivani (17), who had been suffering from typhoid fever for a week, was pursuing her studies in Palia city.

Manoj said his sister was hospitalized in Palia, but her condition deteriorated and he had to be put on oxygen.

On Wednesday, they wanted to shift her to Lakhimpur for better treatment, but could not as the overflowing Sharda flooded the city, completely disrupting vehicle movement, she added.

Shivani died a day later, Manoj said.

Palia, along with the tehsils of Nighasan, Dhaurahra and Lakhimpur, are among the worst affected by the floods caused by the Sharda, Ghaghra, Mohana and other rivers.

In Palia, Sharda eroded the Bhira-Palia road, disconnecting it from the district headquarters a couple of days ago.

The other main route connecting Palia to the district headquarters via Nighasan was also submerged in knee-deep water and was closed to traffic from July 9 to July 11 night.

Palia sub-divisional magistrate Kartikey Singh expressed his regret over the incident and said that if he had been informed of the matter on time, he could have found some way to help the family.
