Patnaik directed all nine MPs in the Rajya Sabha to raise issues related to Odisha in a more sharp and forceful manner. The party also decided to emerge as a strong opposition voice in the Rajya Sabha.

Following the defeat in the recently concluded general elections, the BJD is left with no representation in the Lok Sabha for the first time in its electoral history.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party almost made a clean sweep in the 2024 general elections by winning 20 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats. However, despite the strong Modi wave in Odisha, Congress managed to retain the Koraput Lok Sabha seat.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, BJD MP Sasmit Patra said the party will emerge as a strong opposition voice in the upper house of Parliament and raise issues related to the interests of Odisha.

“We will emerge as a strong opposition party in the Rajya Sabha under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik. The people of Odisha will see how BJD will raise its voice sharply and powerfully on every issue on the floor of the House. The party president has directed us to raise various issues in the interest of Odisha, be it special category status for the state, national highways, railways, telecom, digital connectivity, banking, tribal development, youth, education health,” Patra said.

“We BJD MPs will raise issues related to the state in the Rajya Sabha as the voice of Odisha. The party president also directed that if the voice of 4.5 crore people of Odisha is not given due respect then BJD will emerge as the strongest opposition in India,” he further said.
