New Delhi [India], India Meteorological Department said on Monday that recent satellite images suggest light to moderate rain at many places, with occasional heavy spells accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in the next few hours, which will bring plenty of respite from the scorching heat.

"Recent satellite imagery suggests: (i) Light to moderate rain at many places, with occasional heavy spells accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds likely over western Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 3 hours," the IMD posted on X.

"Light to moderate rain at places, accompanied by isolated thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds in Vidarbha and adjoining North Telangana, East Telangana, Rayalaseema, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh , Southeast Rajasthan, Eastern Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, during the same period," he added.

Additionally, the IMD also forecasts light to moderate rain at many places with occasional heavy spells accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds likely over western Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 3 hours.

Earlier, fresh rain lashed parts of the national capital on Sunday afternoon, bringing respite to people after they had been battling the heatwave in the region for the past two months.

The meteorological department said the monsoon is expected to reach Delhi-NCR around June 30.

The extreme heat wave had increased Delhi's power demand. According to data from the State Freight Forwarding Center, at 3:22 p.m. As of June 18, Delhi's peak power demand recorded 8,647 MW. It is the highest ever recorded in the history of the national capital.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Energy, on June 17, 2024, the Northern Region alone recorded its highest peak demand of 89 GW, which was successfully met despite the prevailing heat wave.
