The Chief Minister said that 996 new villages have emerged in the state in the last 18 years due to the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar.

He said that since 2006, large-scale deforestation took place to establish settlements and cultivate poppies, while these illegal immigrants began to encroach on the resources, job opportunities, land and rights of the indigenous people.

"I am extremely happy that the National Green Tribunal has recently taken suo motu cognizance of the issue of deforestation in the north-eastern states and Manipur," Singh told the media.

He said a three-member cabinet sub-committee was formed in February 2023 under the chairmanship of Tribal Affairs Minister Letpao Haokip to detect illegal immigrants from Myanmar and the committee along with the officer visited the districts of Tengnoupal, Chandel, Churachandpur and Kamjon. 2,480 immigrants detected.

The other two ministers on the cabinet sub-committee were Water Resources Minister Awangbo Newmai and Education and Law Minister Basant Kumar Singh.The Chief Minister said that Haokip belonged to the Kuki community, Newmai Nag and Singh belonged to the Meitei community.

He said that recently, 5,457 more illegal immigrants have been detected in Kamjong district and biometric data of 5,173 such illegal immigrants out of 5,457 has been collected.

The chief minister said so far 379 migrants have voluntarily gone back to Myanmar and 15 have died due to natural causes. He said as per the reports received, the migrants are willing to go back to Myanmar as the farming season has started, but they have been turned back. Bombings by the Myanmar military in the past few days have caused hesitation.He said that whenever the situation in Myanmar improves, the illegal immigrants will be sent back to Myanmar by the district administration.

“We have seen some news articles in the media that an NGO called the International Committee of Jurists (ICJ) has reportedly urged India to stop the deportation of Myanmar refugees. They do not have a clear understanding. They should understand that their action is against the larger interests of the people of the state and the nation, it is a matter of national security and justice will prevail."

A total of 7,937 Myanmar nationals fled Manipur in 2021 after the military regime seized power in the neighboring country.About 34,350 people have also taken refuge in the neighboring state of Mizoram since the army took over administration in Myanmar.
