New Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has launched a first-of-its-kind B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics from the upcoming academic year 2024-25, officials said.

He informed that there will be 50 seats in the course and admission will be through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

“The program aims to develop expertise in various aspects of AI and data analytics, offering a broad view of its applications across industries,” said V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras.

“The number of students seeking admission through JEE will be 50. “There will be an emphasis on fundamentals of mathematics, data science, AI and machine learning foundations, application development and responsible design, in addition to a distinct interdisciplinary flavour,” he said.,

AI is developing across engineering, science and humanities disciplines. Understanding these multidisciplinary relationships is essential to being successful in this field, Kamakoti said.

“The B.Tech in AI and Data Analytics is uniquely positioned to address this aspect. This is the first case of its kind in the world."

The course will be offered through the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, founded by Sunil Wadhwani, an IIT Madras alumnus and co-founder of IGATE and Mastech Digital, with an endowment of Rs 110 crore.“This BTech curriculum will offer great academic flexibility, allowing students to customize their learning journey through a wide range of electives from within and outside the department,” the director said.

From exploring the intricacies of speech and language technology and applications in computer vision to time-series analysis, students can delve deeper into areas of personal passion and interest, he said.

“The curriculum has been developed based on the experience gained by our faculty over more than a decade. Through this, IITM aspires to prepare top-notch AI professionals, entrepreneurs and researchers who can take on the grand AI challenges in the emerging market. Can face with great confidence,” said Kamakoti.
