Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], after the National Commission for Women (NCW) initiated legal action against TMC MP Mahua Moitra for her comments against NCW president Rekha Sharma, challenged the police in Delhi to act immediately following suo moto orders.

"Come on Delhi Police, please take immediate action with these suo moto orders. I am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest," Mahua Moitra said in a post on X.

"I can hold my own umbrella," she added.

Earlier, Mahua Moitra sparked a fresh row when she posted a derogatory reply on 'X' to a video showing NCW president Rekha Sharma arriving at the Hathras stampede site with a person holding an umbrella over her head.

On Friday, the NCW took suo moto cognizance of the derogatory comments made by Moitra against NCW president Rekha Sharma.

These crude comments are not only scandalous but also a serious violation of women's right to dignity, the NCW said in a press release. After careful consideration, the Commission has determined that Moitra's comments fall under Section 79 of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023, she added.

Condemning the defamatory statements, the CNM said the derogatory nature of these comments, particularly directed at the CNM president during her official visit to Hathras, is deeply reprehensible and urges strict legal action against Moitra.

The NCW said it has initiated legal proceedings against Moitra and lodged a formal complaint with the Delhi Police. A letter was sent to the Lok Sabha Speaker in Parliament, stating that the comments made by Moitra are condemnable in the strongest possible words and as a Member of Parliament, it is unbecoming of her stature.

The NCW has urged the Speaker to investigate the matter and take appropriate action against Moitra.
