New Delhi [India], Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attacked the opposition over the results of Lok Sabha elections 2024 and said that if this election was to save the Constitution, then the country would have chosen the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for it.

PM Modi said, "If this election was to save the Constitution, then the people of the country elected us for this."

Recalling the 1977 Lok Sabha elections held after a 21-month long period of Emergency, PM Modi said the people of the country had voted to re-establish the Constitution in 1977.

He said, "During the Lok Sabha elections it was said that this was the first election in the history of the country to save the Constitution. I want to remind them (the opposition) of the 1977 Lok Sabha elections when newspapers were banned and radio. The entire country voted to reestablish the Constitution. Are you (the opposition) misleading the country?" the Prime Minister said.

In the 1977 Lok Sabha elections, the Janata Party (now the Bharatiya Janata Party) won a landslide victory by securing 295 seats.

Congress, which bore the brunt of imposition of Emergency, was reduced to 154 seats.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led NDA will get 293 seats and the BJP will get 234 seats. On the other hand, India Bloc secured 234 seats and Congress's tally dropped to 99.

Meanwhile, as Rajya Sabha proceedings began today, the House expressed grief over the death of people in a stampede incident at a 'satsang' in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district.

Rajya Sabha leader of opposition Kharge called on the government to enact a law aimed at preventing such incidents in future.
