Mumbai, Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday seemed to agree with the views expressed by some sections on the possible merger of the smaller party with the grand old party.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Tharoor said, “As far as alliance or merger of small parties with Congress is concerned, it seems that if the ideology is the same then what is the need for separation? Let's see what happens.''

Notably, veteran politician Sharad Pawar has predicted that over the next few years, many regional parties will align more closely with the Congress, or even merge with it. He talked about the future political scenario during an interview with The Indian Express.

Tharoor termed as "meaningless" Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, in which he had asked them to join hands with Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde respectively.

He also expressed confidence that the parties which have not yet joined the opposition alliance will do so after the results of the Lok Sabha elections are declared.

Addressing an election campaign rally on Friday, Modi advised the Pawar-led NCP (SP) and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) to "merge rather than die", according to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Shake hands with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. With Congress.

Shinde and Ajit Pawar had left their respective parties in 2022 and 2023.

Sharad Pawar immediately hit back at the Prime Minister, saying he will not stand with those who do not believe in parliamentary democracy, which is under threat because of Modi.
