Chief Minister Sawant was addressing a gathering after paying floral tributes at the Martyr Memorial at Azad Maidan in Panaji on Revolution Day.

Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik and several freedom fighters were present.

"Although our country became independent in 1947, we were still under the Portuguese rule. Our freedom fighters fought the Portuguese for 14 years after that to liberate Goa. Goa is advanced among the small states. If we Had we got independence along with our country, we would have become a more advanced state in terms of development (among smaller states). We missed three finance commissions because we got independence 14 years late. Because of this we lacked development.

He said that it was only after pressure from freedom fighters across India that the then Indian government launched 'Operation Vijay' to fight against the Portuguese.

The Chief Minister said, "That's when Goa got liberation on December 19, 1961. Since then every government has contributed for the state. Goa has been developing at every step and in the last 10 years the infrastructure development and human development has reached new heights. But has arrived." ,

He said that a lot of development has taken place in the last 10 years of the double engine government of the state and the Centre.

Chief Minister Sawant said, "The government is committed to providing facilities in the education sector. We are focusing on innovation and revolution in education."
