He said this while presiding over the first meeting of the Governing Board of the newly formed Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) at his residence at Lok Kalyan Marg on Tuesday.

The foundation was established under the ANRF Act, 2023, to regulate all research and development in natural science establishments in India.

The first meeting focused on discussion on India's science and technology landscape and redesign of research and development programmes.

"Research should focus on finding new solutions to existing problems," he said, emphasizing the need to find localized solutions to global problems.

He called on the research community to set “big goals, focus on achieving them, and conduct innovative research.”

The Prime Minister also discussed the “need to improve and standardize institutions”, create a dashboard to easily track ongoing research and development in the country and also suggested preparing a list of experts in the field based on their experience.

"The country's scientific community must have faith that there will be no shortage of resources for their efforts," Prime Minister Modi said, while highlighting the need for scientific monitoring of resource utilization.

Additionally, he suggested the classification of Atal Tinkering Labs and discussed the need for research “into environmental change, electric vehicle battery ingredients, and lab-grown diamonds.”

The governing body also decided to launch a program to “pair universities where research is at a nascent stage with established top-tier institutions in a mentoring mode.”

Meanwhile, the ANRF is expected to "launch programs in selected priority areas such as electric vehicle mobility, advanced materials, solar cells, smart infrastructure, medical and health technology, sustainable agriculture and photonics."

The meeting also decided to launch Centers of Excellence to support interdisciplinary research in humanities and social sciences.

The ANRF acts as the apex body to provide high-level strategic direction of scientific research in the country as per the recommendations of the National Education Policy.

The foundation meeting also discussed redesigning research and development programs.

The ANRF was established to promote research and development and also foster a culture of research and innovation in all universities, research institutions and research and development laboratories in India.

Over the years, it seeks to launch programs based on a mission-mode solution-focused approach in selected priority areas.

The meeting also discussed various areas of strategic interventions of ANRF including India's global positioning in key sectors, aligning R&D with national priorities, promoting inclusive growth, capacity building, boosting scientific advancements and ecosystem of innovation, as well as closing the gap between academic research. and industrial applications through industry-aligned translational research.

The Governing Body also directed the ANRF to align its strategies with the objectives of Viksit Bharat 2047.
