In an interview with IANS here, he said the culture of Meghalaya is different from the rest of the country, where women have a prominent role in the society.

“We have different structures for marriage, divorce etc. In this way, the Christian system is very different from Hinduism. But if the central government implements the Uniform Civil Code across the country, Meghalaya will definitely face problems in the coming days,” Pala said.

He also mentioned that the hilly northeastern state may see strong resistance from its society against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).However, the Congress MP rejected the possibility of any protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Meghalaya.

“The CAA was implemented across the country after it was passed in Parliament, although large parts of Meghalaya have been kept out of the CAA, I believe that once the law is passed in Parliament and implemented, then There is no point talking about it,” he said. Said.

On whether the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system should be introduced in Meghalaya, Pala responded, “The central government has not said anything about ILP in Meghalaya. The state government is not authorized to start this system. Therefore we will have to wait for the Centre's opinion on ILP.

The Congress MP described the ruling National People's Party (NPP) as corrupt and said it had looted government money.

He alleged, “The NPP has embezzled public funds from Meghalaya to fund its party in other northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland etc. People have seen cash seized from the convoy of Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma.” This is proof of how the NPP is “They are using government money to expand their party base, which is very unfortunate.”

Pala also said that there are check gates in the state and if people are carrying or bringing any goods into the state then money is being collected from them.

“If you buy something in Meghalaya and take it to Assam and other places, you will have to pay money at those gates. If you are bringing any goods to Meghalaya, the same system of payment will have to be adopted. This is a pure example of corruption,” he argued.

Vincent Pala has been winning from Shillong Lok Sabha seat since 2009. He was made the Union Minister of State during the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government at the Centre. Congress leaders are hoping to win for the fourth consecutive time in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.Political observers believe that anti-incumbency wave will be a factor against Pal this time. However, he rejected this and said that it would not be a dual issue in the elections.

“People have seen my development work over the years. The current government in Meghalaya has failed to bring any infrastructure to the state. But during the Congress period, airports and many other projects were constructed,” the Shillong MP said.Pala also said that if he comes to power for the fourth time, he will take new initiatives to develop tourism as well as bring infrastructural projects in the state.

Voting for two Lok Sabha seats in Meghalaya will be held on April 19. The NPP has fielded state health minister Ampreen Lyngdoh against Vincent Pala for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
