The apology came in the wake of Ranaut's reaction to Kapoor's previous comments about societal attitudes towards successful women.

The controversy started when Kapoor initially expressed his unfamiliarity with Kangana Ranaut's identity during a press conference for his film 'Hamare Barah'. He was quoted as saying, "Who is this Kangana ji? Please tell me who she is? Obviously you are asking so she must be a very big heroine? Is she beautiful?" Later in the conference, Kapoor commented on society's perceptions of successful women.

Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut reacted swiftly through her Instagram Stories, sharing a clip of Kapoor's press conference. He asked, "Do you agree with Annu Kapoor ji that we hate a successful woman, hate her more if she is beautiful and hate her even more if she is powerful? Is this true? ?"

The backdrop of this controversy includes an alleged incident at the Chandigarh airport on June 6, where a CISF woman constable allegedly assaulted Kangana Ranaut while she was preparing to board a flight to Delhi for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting. But he was slapped.

An FIR has been registered against the constable under sections 321 and 341 of the IPC, although no arrests have been made so far.
