Harare India captain Shubman Gill on Saturday said he should have carried the bat during the first T20I against Zimbabwe here, while calling his team's batting effort "disappointing".

An inexperienced Zimbabwe defeated a Next-Gen star-studded Indian team by 13 runs in the first T20I match of the five-match series here.

“By the middle (of the match) we had lost five wickets and it would have been better for us if I had stayed there till the end. “I’m very disappointed with the way I came out and the way the rest of the match went,” Gill said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“There was a little hope for us. But as you chase 115 and your No. 10 batsman is out there, you know something is wrong,” he added.

India were recently crowned T20 World Cup champions, albeit with a different set of players.

Gill said the team was unable to execute its plans.

"We talked about taking our time and enjoying our batting, but it didn't work out that way," he added.

He also said India were a little below par on the field, despite bowling well to restrict the hosts to 115 for nine.

“We bowled pretty well. We were disappointed on the field. We were not up to par and everyone seemed a little rusty,” he noted.

The work is not finished: Race

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza was understandably delighted with the big win, but he reminded his team that the series is still alive.

“I feel very happy for the victory. But the work is not over, the series is not over. World champions play like world champions, so we have to be prepared for the next match,” Raza said.

However, Raza was not happy with the way he batted in Zimbabwe and hoped to improve in that department in the upcoming matches.

“This is not a wicket where you get bowled out for 115. Credit to the bowlers from both sides. It is clearly an indication that we need to improve our skills. We had our plans, we followed through on them and we backed our guys,” he said.

The 38-year-old said his team's reception and fielding were excellent and kept the pressure on India.

“Our catching and fielding was incredible, but we made some mistakes. It shows that there is room for improvement. We knew the fans would cheer us on and give us energy, thanks to them, it helped us,” he said.
