A poacher was arrested in Erode (Tamil Nadu) and two ivory tusks were recovered from him and another person is being searched, forest officials here said.

According to forest officials, a patrol team found a male elephant lying with its tusks chopped off in the Gumadapuram forest area under the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve on April 22. A team was formed to investigate the matter.

Authorities arrested Bhomman (52) of Ethegounden Thotti village in neighboring Karnataka on Sunday in connection with the case. They confiscated two ivory tusks from his house. He was produced before Judicial Magistrate Sathyamangalam, who remanded him to judicial custody.

Another person involved in the case is being searched.

Meanwhile, forest officials who conducted the autopsy are awaiting the results to ascertain the exact cause of death of the elephant, the official said.
