New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Wednesday said it has extended the deadline for the Smart Cities Mission till March 2025, allowing cities to complete ongoing projects, which account for around 10 per cent. of the total projects.

In a statement, the ministry said the mission has received multiple requests from some states to grant more time to complete the remaining projects.

These projects are at an advanced stage of implementation and were delayed due to various conditions on the ground, the statement said.

This is the second time that the mission's deadline has been extended, which was before June 2024.

"As on July 3, 2024, the 100 cities have completed 7,188 projects (90 per cent of total projects) worth Rs 1,44,237 crore as part of the mission. The remaining 830 projects worth Rs 19,926 million of rupees are also in advanced stages of completion," he said.

According to the ministry, in terms of financial progress, the mission has an allocated budget of Rs 48 billion for the 100 cities. Till date, the Union government has released Rs 46,585 crore, 97 per cent of the central government budget allocated to the 100 cities.

Of these funds released to cities, 93 percent have been used to date. The mission has also released all financial support from the central government under the mission to 74 of the 100 cities, the statement said.

The cities have been informed about the extension of the deadline, the ministry said, adding that it will not have any additional cost, beyond the financial allocation already approved under the mission.

"All ongoing projects are expected to be completed by March 31, 2025," the ministry said.

He said the Smart Cities Mission is a novel experiment in India's urban development.

Since its inception in June 2015, the mission has tried several innovative ideas such as inter-city competition for selection of 100 smart cities, stakeholder-driven project selection, formation of special purpose vehicles for implementation of smart cities, the deployment of technology and digital solutions to improve. urban governance and third-party impact assessment by top-level academic and professional institutes.

The 100 cities are developing more than 8,000 multi-sector projects, worth around Rs 1.6 lakh crore, the ministry said.
