Jalpaiguri (West Bengal): A housewife in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district committed suicide after being harassed by a group of people over her alleged "extramarital affair", police said on Tuesday.

Four people, including two women, have been arrested in connection with the incident, which took place amid the ongoing uproar over the public thrashing of a couple over alleged illicit relations in Chopra in North Dinajpur district.

According to the police complaint lodged by the deceased's husband, a group of women in Dabgram-Phulbari area had publicly abused him, accusing him of having extramarital affairs.

The victim was missing for a week, and upon her return on Monday, local women publicly abused and beat her, raising doubts about her character.

When the husband tried to intervene, the group beat him up as well. According to the complaint, late on Monday night, unable to bear the insult, the woman committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

Deputy Commissioner (East) Deepak Sarkar said, “We have arrested four people for their alleged involvement in the case.

The incident has added to the ongoing outrage over the recent public thrashing of a couple in North Dinajpur district.

Governor CV Anand Bose has sought a report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while the BJP has accused the ruling TMC of "establishing Taliban rule" in the state.
