Lucknow, BSP President Mayawati on Thursday demanded strict action from the Bihar government on the burning of several houses of Dalits in Nawada district of the state.
The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh also called for full financial assistance from the government for the rehabilitation of the poor victims.
"The incident of burning of many houses of poor Dalits and ruining their lives by bullies in Nawada, Bihar is extremely sad and serious. The government should take strict legal action against the culprits and also provide full financial assistance for the rehabilitation of the victims. " ,” Mayawati posted in Hindi on Instagram.
According to local police, a group of people set fire to 21 houses in Manjhi Tola of Mufassil police station area of Nawada district of Bihar on Wednesday evening.
No one was injured in the incident, although police said preliminary investigation suggested a land dispute may be behind the incident.
Police have registered a case and started investigating the matter and have taken 10 suspects into custody by Wednesday night, while a large police presence has been deployed in the area to prevent any further incidents, officials said. The contingent has been deployed.
