New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday expressed hope that there will be criticism and disagreement in the House but there will be no disruption.

Thanking the House for being elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second consecutive term, Birla said he would work to maintain the high standards of parliamentary traditions.

"The ruling and opposition parties run the House together, the strength of Indian democracy lies in listening to everyone and running the House with the consent of all. I would expect to run the House with the consent of all. Even if there is only one member from a party, He should get adequate time,” Birla said.

"My expectation would be that the House should run without any interruption. We have been elected by the people with hope, so I insist that there should not be any disruption in the House. There may be criticism, but creating obstruction is not the tradition of the House." Birla said, running in the well is not the tradition of Parliament.

He said, "I never want to take action against any member, but everyone wants that the high standards of parliamentary tradition be maintained. For this I sometimes have to take tough decisions."

Describing consent and disagreement as part of the tradition of the House, he expressed hope that the opposition will give constructive suggestions and the government will incorporate those suggestions.

He said, "I urge everyone to remember the great makers of the Constitution in the 18th Lok Sabha and make policies and laws that help the deprived sections of the society."

He also welcomed the 281 first-time members of the Lok Sabha and said they should learn about parliamentary traditions and practices from their seniors.

Birla was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after the motion moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accepted by voice vote.
