New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said that home buyers in the country are being cheated, adding that there is a need to bring uniformity in builder-buyer agreements.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra said, "Buyers are being cheated by builders everywhere and that is why there is a need for uniformity now."

The top court was hearing a PIL filed in 2021 by lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay, which said there was a need for a model agreement to ensure transparency and fairness and to prevent builders and agents from indulging in unfair and restrictive trade practices. Was.

Senior advocate Devashish Bharuka, assisting the bench as amicus curiae, told the bench that a final status report along with the draft builder-buyer agreement has been placed on record.

It was also submitted that the suggestions of the States have been received and incorporated.

The bench said it would study the amicus curiae's report and its objections.

Earlier, the bench had allowed stakeholders including industry associations to submit their suggestions on these model agreements to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The bench has fixed the hearing of the case on July 19.
