Kolkata: A pair of hippopotamuses and five hog deer are among the 13 animals that have been recently inducted into the animal family at the Alipore Zoo here, zoo director Subhankar Sengupta said on Tuesday.

A pair each of swamp deer and four-horned antelope were among the 13 animals brought from Nandankanan Zoo in Odisha.

In return Alipore Zoo sent a pair of giraffes, two pairs of green iguanas and a monitor lizard to Nandankanan.

Notably, a pair of lions, a female tiger, a pair of Himalayan black bears and two pairs of mouse deer from Nandankanan were also brought to the zoo here a week ago.

Senior forest officer said, all the animals are fine.

On March 4, a pair of tigers, including a tapir, were brought to the zoo from the Bengal Wild Animal Park in North Bengal.

This was followed by the addition of a white Royal Bengal tiger, a pair of lemurs, gray wolf, striped hyena, black swan and five wild dogs brought from Vizag Zoo on April 25.

The zoo currently houses 1,266 animals.
