New Delhi: Several Hindu saints on Monday condemned opposition leader Rahul Gandhi's "not Hindu" jibe at the BJP and demanded an apology from him.

Launching a scathing attack on the BJP in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Gandhi said BJP leaders are not Hindus as they indulge in "violence and hatred" round the clock.

His remarks were strongly opposed by the ruling party, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing the Congress leader of calling the entire Hindu community violent.

Reacting to Gandhi's remarks, Swami Avadheshanand Giri said in a video message, "I condemn his repeated remarks that Hindus are violent, and that they breed hatred and indulge in violence round the clock. Are."

He alleged that Gandhi had "tarnished and insulted" the entire Hindu society with his remarks.

Giri said, “He is an honorable member of Parliament and leader of the opposition. Therefore, he should take back his words and apologise.'' He said his comments have hurt the Hindu society and there is anger in the saint community as well.

Swami Balayogi Arun Puri described Gandhi's remarks as "unfortunate" and demanded an apology from him.

"Rahul Gandhi's remarks are extremely derogatory and condemnable. Hindus have never been violent," he said in a video message.
