Hamirpur/Una (Himachal Pradesh), Himachal Pradesh Agriculture Department has set a target of producing about 9.70 lakh metric tonnes of Kharif crop this season.

The agriculture department has set a target of sowing maize, paddy, ragi, pulses and other food grains on 368 lakh hectares of cultivable land in the Kharif season, an official spokesperson said on Sunday.

The maximum target for sowing of maize has been set at 272 lakh hectares of land. The spokesperson said that similarly, in the Kharif season, food grains like paddy are to be sown in 73 thousand hectares, pulses in 18 thousand hectares and ragi in 12,700 hectares.

Apart from this, a target has been set to cultivate vegetables in 87 thousand hectares and ginger in 3 thousand hectares, but due to lack of timely rain till June 19, sowing remained slow in the state.

Most of the farming in Himachal is dependent on rain, but every year the Agriculture Department sets a target for the production of food grains and vegetables in the Kharif season.

This time the department has set a target of producing 9.70 lakh metric tonnes of food grains in the Kharif season.

In this, the maximum production target of maize crop has been kept at 730 metric tons. The production target of paddy crop was set at 155 lakh metric tonnes.

Similarly, a target has been set to produce 1 lakh 75 thousand metric tons of pulses and 13 thousand metric tons of ragi.

Apart from this, a target has been set to produce 18 lakh 17 thousand metric tons of vegetables and 34 thousand metric tons of ginger in the state.

The spokesperson is hopeful that if there is timely and sufficient rain, farmers will be able to achieve the targets set for the production of their crops.
