Shimla: Three independent MLAs, who resigned from the assembly and joined the BJP after voting in favor of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections earlier this year, have been fielded from their respective assembly constituencies in the by-elections for these seats. ,

The names of Ashish Sharma (Hamirpur), Hoshiar Singh (Dehra) and KL Thakur (Nalagarh) are included in the list of BJP candidates released on Thursday. By-elections will be held on July 10.

These three independent MLAs, along with six Congress rebels, had voted in favor of BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan in the February 27 elections. Mahajan won the election. These MLAs had resigned from the House on March 22.

However, their resignations were accepted by Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on June 3, following by-elections on six seats vacated by Congress rebels and the Lok Sabha elections.

Of the six seats that went to polls in the by-elections, Congress won four and BJP won two, the results of which were declared on June 4.

Despite facing a setback in the by-elections for the required six assembly seats due to the disqualification of Congress MLAs, the BJP has once again taken a risk by fielding all three independent MLAs.

Both BJP and Congress have already appointed in-charges for the assembly by-elections to be held on all three seats.

KL Thakur is a two-time MLA from Nalagarh – he won on a BJP ticket in 2012 and as an independent in 2022.

Hoshiar Singh has also been MLA from Dehra twice. In 2017 and 2022, he won the assembly elections as an independent, while Ashish has become MLA from Hamirpur for the first time.
