Mohammad Shadab, a resident of Kanpur, had broken his left hip in an accident a month ago and needed hip replacement. He visited several hospitals in Kanpur and Lucknow, but all of them refused to perform the surgery due to his hemophilia condition.

Finally, he was admitted to the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at KGMU last month under Professor Ashish Kumar, Head of the Department, and Professor Shah Waliullah, a faculty member.

After necessary tests, surgery was done on April 3.

“Joint replacement in a haemophilia patient is very difficult. Patients also had the problem of stiffness in the knees. However, we performed the surgery successfully and the patient is recovering,” said Dr Mayank Mahendra of the department of orthopedic surgery.

“Controlling bleeding during surgery in hemophilia patients is a challenging task,” said Professor Ehsan Siddiqui, Department of Anesthesia.
