Important matters heard by the Supreme Court on Monday, July 8:

* Observing that the sanctity of NEET-UG 2024 has been "violated", SC said a retest may be ordered if the entire process is affected and sought details from the National Testing Agency and the CBI, including the timing and the form of the paper leak, in addition to the numbers of criminals, to know the extent of its effect

* "Why should the State be interested in protecting anyone?" SC said while dismissing the West Bengal government's statement questioning the high court order, directing a CBI probe into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

* Stereotyping differently-abled people in visual media and films perpetuates discrimination and inequality, SC said, while asking filmmakers to refrain from misleading portrayals of such people and not lampoon them.

* SC directed the Center to come up with a model policy on menstrual leave for employees by holding consultations with states and other stakeholders.

* The national policy on distribution of menstrual hygiene products to school-going adolescent girls is at an advanced stage of formulation, the Center told SC

* SC agreed to hear pleas filed by CBI challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict that acquitted Surendra Koli in the sensational 2006 Nithari serial murder case.

* SC agreed to hear a petition by CPI(M) leader M Swaraj seeking invalidation of Congress leader K Babu's election from Thrippunithura seat in the 2021 assembly elections for allegedly using the image of Lord Ayyappa on the voting papers.

* SC appointed former Chief Justice of India U U Lalit to head a search and selection committee to oversee appointments of chancellors of state universities in West Bengal.

* SC agreed to examine pleas filed by Delhi Police challenging the high court order granting bail to four convicts, who were sentenced to life imprisonment in the television journalist Soumya Vishwanathan murder case.

* SC said it would consider listing a fresh petition by AAP leader and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia seeking to revive his bail plea in the special policy scam cases.

* SC said there cannot be a bail condition that allows police to spy on the private life of an accused in a criminal case.

* Home buyers in the country are being defrauded, hence there is a need to achieve uniformity in agreements between builders and buyers, SC observed.
