World Health Day is celebrated every year on 7 April. This year's theme is 'M Health, My Right', which aims to work towards "the right of everyone, everywhere to access quality healthcare".

Speaking to IANS, Dr Shetty, Founder and Chairman, Narayana Health, called for investing more in preventive health care measures, even as cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are rising significantly in India, especially among the youth.

“Hospitals are so badly designed that a person who is not a patient would not like to go into that building. So, we need to create a different kind of approach outside the hospital.

The doctor said, “Now is the time for the healthcare industry to move forward, put more emphasis on preventive measures, promote proactive health management and empower individuals for a healthy tomorrow.,

The cardiologist said that apart from the healthcare industry, even individuals should live with the mindset of 'prevention first', as is important in India too.

“Today, as we celebrate World Health Day, we are facing a harsh reality, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) take 65 per cent of lives in India, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular problems and Cancer is at the forefront. What is more worrying is the rise of these diseases among our youth often due to lack of early detection and awareness,” said Dr Shetty.

“The need of the hour is a ‘prevention first’ mentality,” he said.

Emphasizing the need for prompt testing, he also called upon the health car industry to focus more on preventive measures rather than just care.

The doctor explained that prevention should not be just an option but a “necessity” for a healthy life.“Maintaining and nourishing our bodies should not come from fear, but from a commitment to daily care. Investing in preventive health care measures is not just an option, it is a necessity that will substantially reduce our future disease burden,” he told IANS.-- RVT/UK
