New Delhi, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday accused the ruling BJP of gross mismanagement in the healthcare sector and termed it one of the major failures of the Narendra Modi government.

Ramesh reiterated the Congress' promise of universal right to health, as made in the party's manifesto.

He said the Congress manifesto guarantees the universal right to health and said it is needed amid rising costs of health care and health insurance.

The Congress leader also criticized the government for keeping health insurance in the 18 per cent GST slab and said more than 63 per cent of Indians do not have health insurance.

Ramesh said, “The complete mismanagement of the healthcare sector is part of the long list of failures of the other 10 years of the Modi government.On June 4, every India can rest assured of the Congress Party's guarantee of the right to health for all," a post on X.

"Our charter guarantees the universal right to health for every Indian. At the heart of this right to health is a health coverage of Rs 25 lakh for every citizen," he said.

Ramesh said that these revolutionary health care guarantees are much needed today.

The Congress leader said, “The short-sighted Modi government has imposed 18 percent GST on health insurance.Health insurance premiums have increased at 4 times the rate of inflation. According to industry body PHDCCI, health care costs have increased by 18-20 per cent per year," he said.

He said, “The cost of a health cover of Rs 10 lakh has increased by 75 per cent in the last 6 years. More than 90 crore Indians (63 per cent) have no health insurance of any kind.,

The Congress in its manifesto 'Nyaya Patra' has promised universal and free health care in public health centers such as hospitals, clinics, primary health centres, mobile health care units, dispensaries and health camps; Free healthcare to include investigation, diagnosis, treatment, surgery, drug rehabilitation and palliative care.

The party has also promised to implement the Rajasthan model of cashless insurance up to Rs 25 lakh for universal health care.
