New Delhi: Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Thursday launched a plant distribution drive in Narela and Bawana, aiming to distribute over 7.74 lakh plants free of cost this year as part of the work of development for villages.

The announcement was made during a 'Vikas Sabha' organized in Narela and Bawana Vidhan Sabha constituencies.

Rai highlighted the government's commitment to improving the quality of life in rural areas of Delhi.

"The Kejriwal government is dedicated to providing comprehensive facilities to the residents of rural Delhi. We are investing Rs 204 crore in the development works in Narela and Bawana villages," Rai said.

"We aim to distribute and plant more than 64 lakh saplings this year, with the cooperation of all ecological agencies," he added.

The minister said the ambitious plans are part of a larger initiative, in which the government will allocate Rs 900 crore for the development of Delhi villages.

The funds will be used for various infrastructure projects including roads, drains, water bodies, community centres, parks, crematoriums and children's playgrounds, he added.

Apart from infrastructure development, the government is also focusing on increasing green cover in Delhi.

Highlighting the government's continued efforts to combat pollution, Rai highlighted a 30 per cent reduction in pollution levels since the Kejriwal government took over.

"We have continuously worked to decrease pollution and increase green cover in Delhi. Our tree plantation drives have contributed significantly to this effort," Rai said, according to an official statement.

The Delhi Gram Vikas Board, formed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, plays a vital role in these development projects. The board oversees the implementation of various projects aimed at improving amenities in Delhi's villages.

Rai also urged the public to actively participate in the plantation campaign, saying that if everyone integrates tree plantation into their culture and daily life, we will be able to collectively address the pollution problem.

He said the plant distribution programme, which began on Thursday, will be carried out in 30 constituencies across Delhi and will run till August 9.
