Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Congress MP Rahul Gandhi reached Pilkhana village in Aligarh on Friday morning, where he met the families of the victims of the Hathras stampede in which 121 people lost their lives and over a dozen were injured.

The stampede took place on the evening of July 2 at a satsang of religious preacher Suraj Pal, also known as Narayan Sakar Hari and 'Bhole Baba'.

Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday launched a search operation at Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri in search of the self-styled godman.

An FIR has been registered in the incident naming the organizers of the event.

Mainpuri Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sunil Kumar said yesterday that 'Bhole Baba was not found inside his ashram.

Hathras City Superintendent Rahul Mithas also said that he did not find a preacher in the ashram.

On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site of the tragedy and ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

To ensure comprehensiveness and transparency of the subject matter of the investigation, a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission has been constituted under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava.

The Judicial Commission will investigate the stampede incident in the next two months and submit its report to the state government.

According to first-hand reports, the stampede occurred when devotees ran to seek blessings and collect soil from the preacher's feet, but were stopped from doing so by his security personnel. After this they started pushing each other, due to which many people fell, causing chaos at the spot.
