"A #fake WhatsApp message claims that Agneepath scheme has been re-launched as 'Sainik Samman Yojana' after review with several changes, including increasing the duty period to 7 years, 60 per cent permanent employees And includes increase in income… No such decision has been taken by the Government of India,” the Press Information Bureau clarified on its X handle.

The fake message going viral had several spelling mistakes, making it appear suspicious.

The opposition, which has been critical of the Agneepath scheme from the beginning, had aggressively questioned its credibility during the Lok Sabha election campaign and the Congress had 'promised' to scrap the scheme if it came to power at the Centre.

The Agneepath scheme is a "tour of duty style" scheme that was implemented in September 2022 to recruit soldiers below commissioned officer rank in the three services of the armed forces for a period of four years only.

The personnel recruited under this system will be called Agniveer.
