Chandigarh Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday held a review meeting on the law and order situation with senior police officials and directed them to take strict action against criminals.

During the meeting, Saini directed the police officers to ensure robust law and order situation in the state.

He stressed the need to take strict action against criminals, particularly gang networks. The campaign against gangsters and other criminals in the state must be relentless and exhaustive, the chief minister said, according to an official statement.

Notably, the meeting comes at a time when opposition parties have intensified their attacks on the Saini-led BJP government in the state over the alleged deteriorating law and order situation.

Reacting to the attacks by unidentified armed assailants who shot dead JJP leader Ravindra Saini, owner of a two-wheeler dealership showroom in Hansi, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda said: It is a matter of great concern and anger that the “BJP has handed over the people”. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Saini during the meeting, while taking a tough stance on various incidents of crime, including rescue, said that the presence of police on the ground should be such that it creates fear among criminals.

He directed the police to take decisive action against criminals within a week to curb all criminal incidents.

The prime minister said he would personally review the crime rate in another meeting with the police department, the statement said.

He ordered senior police officials to personally meet crime victims to improve public confidence in the force.

Saini also highlighted the importance of taking even the smallest information seriously to strengthen the image of the police among the public, ensuring quick and decisive action.

While directing police officers to faithfully discharge their duties, the chief minister emphasized that strict action must be taken against those involved in illegal drug trafficking across the state.

He also called for expedited confiscation of drug traffickers' properties.

Giving instructions to the director general of police (DGP), the prime minister said that civil society seminars should be organized to inform the general public and younger generations about the three new penal laws implemented from July 1 in the country.

Chief Secretary T V S N Prasad, Chief Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Rajesh Khullar, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department Anurag Rastogi, Director General of Police, Shatrujeet Kapur, Director General of Prisons Mohd Akil, CID Chief Alok Mittal, Additional Director General of Police O P Singh and other officials were present during the meeting.
