Washington: Indian American Republican leader Nikki Haley on Tuesday released several dozen delegates she had won for presumptive nominee Donald Trump in the party's presidential primaries earlier this year.

Haley's move comes ahead of the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at which Trump will be formally nominated as the party's presidential nominee for the November 5 general election.

"The nominating convention is a time for Republican unity. Joe Biden is incapable of running for a second term and Kamala Harris would be a disaster for America. We need a President who will hold our enemies accountable, secure our border, protect our Will cut in." "I encourage our delegates to support Donald Trump in Milwaukee next week," Haley said in a statement.

Haley won 97 delegates compared to Biden's 2,265. A candidate needs 1,215 delegates to win the GOP presidential nomination. He suspended his campaign in March.

The former US Ambassador to the United Nations and South Carolina governor is not attending the RNC.

Haley's spokesperson Cheney Denton said, "She was not invited and she has no objection to that. Trump is entitled to the conference he wants. She has made it clear that she is voting for him and Wish him all the best."
