Ahmedabad: Congress on Monday demanded withdrawal of fee hike in government medical colleges in Gujarat.

Gujarat Medical Research and Education Society (GMERS), affiliated with the state government, runs 13 medical colleges.

"The state government has increased the fees of GMERS-run medical colleges by 67 to 88 per cent overnight. This is not acceptable," Gujarat Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil told reporters here.

"This exorbitant hike will ruin the dreams of the middle class and the poor to pursue a career in the medical profession. An increase of 67 to 88 per cent can never be justified. It could have been 5 to 10 per cent. State government fee hike should be withdrawn immediately,” he said.

Gohil said, Gujarat Congress will support the students protesting against the fee increase.
