PORBANDAR: The ruling BJP has filed a complaint with election officials demanding action against those involved in circulating an old video of a shoe being thrown at Union Minister and BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Porbandar seat Mansukh Mandaviya.

In a complaint to district collector and election officer KD Lakhani on Sunday, BJP's Porbandar district unit said a video of the 2017 incident was deliberately circulated on social media platforms to tarnish the image of BJP and Mandaviya and take political Was. Benefit before Lok Sabha elections.

In the video, a man throws a shoe at Mandaviya who was addressing a small gathering in Vallabhipur town of Bhavnagar.

"Though the video is six years old, it is now being circulated by some elements claiming that a shoe was thrown at Mandaviya during an election campaign on April 6. This old video is now being spread by tarnishing the image of the BJP. It is being broadcasted to gain political mileage.The complaint states that its Porbandar candidate before the elections is Mandaviya.

"Mandaviya is a respected national leader and has been in public life for two years. He has been serving as a Union Minister for the last eight years, hence such an attempt to tarnish his image has hurt the sentiments of his supporters and well-wishers. " We want the authorities to take strict action against those involved in circulating this video.

The incident took place on May 28, 2017, when Mandaviya, who served as the union MO for transport, addressed a small gathering in Vallabhipur town in Bhavnaga district.Bhavesh Sonani, a 20-year-old college student who was then a member of the Patidar Anama Andolan Committee, threw his shoe at Mandaviya, but it fell a few meters away. The Patidar reservation movement was at its peak at that time under the leadership of Hardik Patel.

Sonani was arrested by the local police under Indian Penal Code sections 353 (assaulting a public servant) and 186 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of his duty).
