New Delhi: The central government has initiated the process to dismiss CRPF's DI-ranked former chief sports officer over allegations of sexual harassment leveled by some women serving in the paramilitary force, official sources said on Friday.

He said that after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) accepted the recommendation of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), a dismissal notice has been issued against Deputy Inspector General Khaja Singh.

Sources said final orders will be issued after considering the reply received from the accused officer within 15 days.

Khajan Singh did not answer the questions asked on this matter.

The dismissal notice against the officer, currently posted in Mumbai, was recently issued after a probe conducted by the CRPF found him "guilty" on charges of sexual harassment. She won a silver medal in the 200 m butterfly event at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, India's first medal in swimming since 1951.

He had earlier denied the allegations and said that the sexual harassment allegations were "absolutely false" and were made to "malign his image".

The CRPF, which has about 3.25 lakh personnel, first inducted women into the combat ranks in 1986. It currently has six all-women battalions, with a total strength of around 8,000 personnel.

There are also women personnel in sports and other administrative wings.
